6 Day Trekking and Camping Adventure in the High Atlas.

A 6 day circular route taking in high passes, peaks, valleys, Berber villages, a mountain lake and for those who wish: Mount Toubkal summit. This is a summer trek with camping for some of the nights and mountain gites for the others. Fully supported with mules and muleteers to carry gear and cook delicious hearty meals. This is a long trek and although it does not require technical skills, it does require a good level of fitness as several days are spent above 3000 metres and altitude sickness needs to be watched for.

Day 1: Marrakech - Imlil - Tizi n´Tamatert - Ouaneskra - Tacheddirt

You will be collected in Marrakech at 8.am and driven to Imlil in the High Atlas, a busy trail head village as it is the start point for most Toubkal treks. Your guide and support team will be waiting for you there, your gear will be stowed on the mules and after a welcome mint tea, your trek will begin. An 8 km climb over Tizi n´Tamatert pass, down to Ouaneskra village and on to Tacheddirt at 2314m, where the muleteers will prepare a campsite by the river. 5 to 6 hours walking.
Day 2: Tacheddirt - Tizi Likemt - Azib Likemt

After a hearty breakfast the morning starts with a long slow ascent across the valley and up to the pass of Tizi Likemt 3555m. It is fairly tough going with some loose scree on the ground. From the pass, there is an amazing view of Toubkal and its sister peaks. After a lunch break you have a long downhill descent to the village of Azib Likemt 2600m, where you will camp for the night. 5 to 6 hours walking.

Day 3: Azib Likemt - Tizi n'Ououraine - Amsourzerte

Today’s trek takes you through varying mountain landscapes with more incredible vistas across the peaks to Toubkal and the Ifni Dome from Tizi n’Ououraine: which is at 3120m, a great lunch stop. From the pass the trek continues to Amsourzerte at 1797m, where you’ll spend the night in a simple village gite. 5 to 6 hours walking.

Day 4: Amsourzerte - Ifni Lake
After breakfast we leave Amsourzerte, trekking west and passing through several small villages on your way towards Ifni Lake at 2392m: the only lake in the High Atlas Mountains. Ifni Lake is surrounded by towering peaks, scree and rubble and is a pleasant place to set up a campsite and spend the afternoon relaxing at the shore, bring your swimming gear as it may be just perfect for a cool dip. 3 to 4 hours walking.

Day 5: Ifni Lake - Neltner Hut

After yesterday’s gentle day, you will be rested for today’s tough climb. The route  heads up a long steep path up a scree slope towards the pass of  Tizi n'Ouanoums at 3684m; a narrow ledge between two shafts of rock. From here it is a long switchback descent down a precipitously steep scree slope to the Neltner Hut at 3207m: a mountain refuge where you’ll spend the night. Weather permitting a camp will be set up here to avoid the overcrowded dormitories inside the refuge. 5 to 6 hours walking.

Day 6: Toubkal Refuge - Toubkal Summit - Imlil - Marrakech
Today you will be up early for the ascent of Toubkal (4,167m). A 5 am breakfast with a 5.30 start to be on the top before it gets too hot and crowded. It’s a challenging trek to the peak; the vistas of the surrounding peaks and the distant Sahara desert make it all worth it. After the glory of the summit, you will retrace your steps to the Refuge for some lunch and then follow the well-trodden track down to Imlil, passing the site of Sidi Chamharouch. Once you arrive in Imlil, you will have a welcome tea break and a debriefing with your guide, any gear returned, and your transport will be ready to drive you to Marrakech. 10 to 12 hours walking.
